“Iron Man 3” is the first movie after the events of “The Avengers“, which was the closing of “Phase 1”. “Phase 2” kicks off with “Iron Man 3”, which is not a follow up to “Iron man 2″ but rather “The Avengers.”

The movie has already opened overseas, and has fared well, beating “The Avengers” in some markets. It has grossed over $300 million overseas to date.  Projections have the film opening between 150-170 million on opening weekend. In comparison, the first “Iron Man” debuted with $98 million and “Iron Man 2” opened with $128 million, grossing $585 Million and $624 Million respectfully.

No other movie is opening this weekend, due to “Iron Man 3” possibly crushing any competition.  With no other new releases, holdovers like “Pain & Gain” and “Oblivion” have a change to up their domestic grosses.

With “Iron Man 3’s” debut, it is not a question of “Is it going to be number one?” but rather “How much is it going to make?” By late Monday  the numbers will show how strong “Iron Man 3” is with audiences, and if it can beat “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II” for the second biggest opening weekend, behind “The Avengers”

With his contractual obligations completed after “Iron Man 3”, Robert Downey Jr. has yet to confirm if he is returning as Tony Stark after “The Avengers 2“. Director Shane Black is positive that Robert will return as Iron Man for at least one more movie. Shane stated “I think he’ll be back for another one. I’m sure of it.”

“Iron Man 3” opens nationwide on May 3
